Well-played, General Hospital. First, the soap’s new writing team friend-zoned Carly and Jason. Laura Wright even suggested that the former “marrieds” could never be together in the same town as Sonny. But then…oh, boy. Then came the week of June 24, and suddenly, “Jarly” shippers weren’t just hopeful again, they were sure that they’d be getting the couple on which they’d had to give up.

The telltale dialogue came during an intense scene between Carly and Spinelli. She’d just learned that she, of all things, was the leverage that Cates the feds had been using to strong-arm Jason into working for the good guys instead of the bad. She was the reason that he’d had to stay away from his children. She was the reason that he’d lost three years of his life and who can guesstimate how many new lines of black T-shirts.
On one hand, Carly confessed to Spinelli, she was livid that Jason would make such a sacrifice without consulting her. On the other, “I’m so moved,” she said, “to see how much Jason loves me.”
By and by, Spinelli explained that if all the roles were reversed, he’d do exactly what Jason had done for Carly for Maxie. Without hesitation. No matter how furious she’d be. “I love Maxie the way Jason loves you,” Spinelli said. And boom! There it was. With a single line, General Hospital seemed to signal that maybe, just maybe Jason and Carly were endgame after all.
How do we figure that? Maxie and Spinelli were once a madly-in-love couple. Then they spent years as the best of friends. And now…now they’ve found their way back to one another. Sound like any other duo we know? Jason and Carly started off as lovers. As pals, they became so close that they all but redefined the word. Then, when they pretended to fall for one another to remarry for the sake of the Mob (which apparently cares about such things?), those old feelings were stirred back up.

When Jason returned to Port Charles, he and Carly agreed not to go there again. But Spinelli’s dialogue made it clear: The heart wants what it wants. And even if it takes a while, the heart is still gonna want what it wants until it finally gets it. Hence, there’s not only hope that “Jarly” will happen, there’s an actual likelihood, maybe even a certainty, that it will.

And after another spin on the marry-go-’round with her favorite ex, Carly acted on her feelings for his longtime rival Jasper Jacks by saying…</p>

<p>For a hot minute, it looked like Jax’s marriage to Carly (now Laura Wright) might actually stick. But then she suffered a miscarriage after being caught in an explosion <em>and</em> Michael slipped into coma following a botched hit on Sonny, and she seduced her ex in order to get him to sign away his rights to their remaining children. Taking this development poorly, Jax retaliated by shagging Sonny’s old flame, Kate Howard.</p>

<p>Drawn once more to a mafioso, Carly was just starting to get serious with Johnny Zacchara (Brandon Barash, now Jake on <em>Days of Our Lives</em>) when… Dang it! Wouldn’t ya know? Kate’s alternate personality, Connie Falconeri, forced the baby-faced mobster into not only an affair but a marriage in order to <em>really</em> stick it to Sonny. Sorry, Johnny, no coffee for you, then. Not. Even. Decaf.</p>

<p>… it’s just one of the saner moments at Carly’s wedding to reformed serial killer Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth, who now plays Austin Gatlin-Holt). Not only did the groom’s maniacal mother Heather Webber take a shot at objecting in her own unique way, Franco expressed his own displeasure at his fiancée’s affair with her ex by revealing that Sonny had murdered Michael’s biological father. So, “Electric Slide,” anyone?</p>

<p>Though Carly and Sonny got a second (22nd?) chance at happily ever after, it was shattered by son Morgan’s untimely demise. Carly had thought that it couldn’t get any worse than when he was carrying on with Sonny’s babymama, card-carrying femme fatale Ava Jerome, but oh, the fates just <em>had</em> to prove her wrong. There would be no more touching moments of family bonding like this for the Corinthoses!</p>

<p>Much like Carly snuck into Port Charles and made mom Bobbie’s life hell, Mrs. C’s sorta half sister Nelle Benson did the same to <em>her</em>, pretending to have schtupped Sonny, <em>really</em> schtupping Michael and basically setting the stage for more heartache and agita than anyone since… well, Carly. And her legacy of pot-stirring would continue even after her death; that’s how you know that Nelle was a grade-A supervixen!</p>

<p>While an amnesiac Sonny was hanging in Nixon Falls and beginning a new life as mild-mannered “Mike,” his “widow” and bestie sought to shore up the Corinthos clan’s hold on their territory by tying the knot. (This apparently really impresses mobsters.) The renewed romance was just supposed to be for show, but we all know how these things go. Before long, Carly and Jason were remembering just how hot a couple they’d once been.</p>

<p>Shortly after Sonny “rose from the grave,” Jason met his maker, and Carly started needing a compass to know which end was up. By the time she caught her husband in bed with Nina Reeves, the woman for whom his Nixon Falls alter ego “Mike” had fallen, she was ready to pound the final nail in the coffin of their marriage herself.</p>

<p>For many <span style="text-decoration: line-through">years</span> weeks after, Carly flew solo. Then she noticed that Jason’s twin brother Drew Cain would make a fine stand-in for Jason. Emphasis on the “fine.” Like his brother, he was handsome, smitten and found it impossible to stay mad at her.</p>

<p>Carly’s decision to withhold from Michael’s sweetheart Willow Tait the fact that Nina was her biological mother nearly killed her. But since Carly fessed up as soon as she found out that Willow needed a life-saving bone-marrow trasplant, all was forgiven. Not by Nina, of course, but by pretty much everyone else in Port Charles.</p>

<p>What should have been a deliriously happy day for Carly — Michael and Willow’s once-more-with-feeling remarriage ceremony — added bitter to the sweet when the SEC descended on her for committing insider trading with boo Drew. But who could have done something as unthinkable as rat out Carly for criminal activities? Everybody in Port Charles knew that Sonny’s ex was as untouchable as he was, didn’t they?</p>

<p>Unbeknownst to Carly or Sonny — at first, anyway — it was his newly minted fiancée Nina who’d tipped off the authorities. And although in some circles, that might get her praised as a whistle-blower, in Port Charles, it moved her to the front of the line for a brutal break-up — and the added insult of watching her intended circle the wagons around his former wife like he was an overeager cast member of <em>Bonanza</em>.</p>

<p>Shortly after Sonny and Nina tied the knot, Carly learned in quick succession that mom Bobbie had died and the new Mrs. Corinthos had been the snitch. Rather than waste any more time focused on her rival, Carly elected to fight the urge to seek revenge and simply move on.</p>

<p>Although half of Port Charles has risen from the grave over the years, Carly was nonetheless shocked when Jason was resurrected for a second time. As per usual, he was in a mess of trouble: accused of shooting at Sonny and gunning down his eldest child, Dante Falconeri.</p>
