B2 CHRONICLE-TRIBUNE, MARION, IND. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2004 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS AFC INDIVIDUAL Board Sports briefs PRO BASKETBALL Pacers edge Timberwolves BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) Ron Artest and James Jones scored 16 points each Saturday night, and the Indiana Pacers held on for a 106-104 preseason win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Trailing 103-95 with 2:09 remaining, Minnesota chipped away behind rookie Blake Stepp, who scored eight of his 10 points in the last 90 seconds. The Pacers improved to 4-0 in the preseason and have beaten the Timberwolves (3-3) twice.

Stephen Jackson sparked the Pacers early in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of his 11 points in the first four minutes. Wally Szczerbiak led Minnesota with 25 points and eight rebounds. He went 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Anthony Goldwire and Fred Hoiberg scored 13 points apiece for the Timberwolves. PRO GOLF Lehman, Baird tied for lead LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.

(AP) Tom Lehman made two eagles Saturday for a 5- under 67 that left him tied for the lead with Briny Baird in the Funai Classic at Disney. Lehman missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish at 17-under 199, the third straight week he has had at least a share of the 54-hole lead. Baird, winless in 153 starts on the PGA Tour, missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 68. He rallied from a three-shot deficit after Lehman holed out from 88 yards for eagle on the 13th hole. Lehman had a 15- foot eagle putt on No.

4. Scott Verplank had a bogey-free 65 and was one shot behind, but the real threat was only three shots behind. KITE LEADING BY TWO: Tom Kite shot an even-par 72 to take a two-stroke lead over Jose Maria Canizares in a misty drizzle during the third round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Saturday, the Champions Tour's season -ending event at Sonoma Golf Club. Kite, at 10-under 206, has led each of the first three rounds. Canizares shot a 2-under 70 to move into second place, while the three golfers who trailed Kite after the second round all fell back.

extended his Busch Series points lead Saturday, checker holding finish off in the Greg Biffle in a greenSam's Town 'He Dared to Rock' 250 at the Memphis Motorsports Park. Truex's victory, his sixth of the season, extended his lead over Kyle Busch to 208 points as Busch, who was leading until lap 202, fell off after brushing the wall in the second turn and finished 14th. The race that started after overnight and early morning rain included a race-record 1 13 cautions, causing complaints from most of the top finishers about poor driving by slower drivers. "The lap cars cost me the win," Biffle said. "I totally don't understand if they don't have mirrors in their cars, or they don't understand where they are on the racetrack, or they thought they were in the parking Truex, whose Chevrolet started from the pole, led 133 of the 250 laps and seemed to be coasting with 10 laps to go, holding a lead of almost 2 seconds.

11:11 9-10 48 38 Pro baseball WORLD SERIES Saturday's result Boston 11, St. Louis 9, Boston leads series 1-0 Today's game St. Louis (Marquis 15-7) at Boston (Schilling 21-6), 7:10 p.m. Tuesday's garne Boston (Martinez 16-9) at St. Louis, 7:30 p.m.

31 St. Louis at Boston, 6:55 p.m., if necessary World Series notes BUMBLING RAMIREZ GIVES FOR RED SOX: He slips. He trips. He lets it rip. That's Manny Ramirez.

Brilliant with the bat, bumbling in the field, the Red Sox outfielder was in his usual form for Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday night when he singled three times and committed two errors in Boston's 11-9 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Ramirez went 3-for-5, adding a pair of RBIs after failing to drive in a single run in the AL championship series. But he flubbed two plays in a row to allow St. Louis to tie the game in the eighth inning before Mark Bellhorn's two-run homer won it for Boston in the bottom half.

"Those are tough breaks," closer Keith Foulke said. "It's a challenge, but you know what? We've had to deal with challenges all year. It's just another challenge that we've overcome." WALKER DOES IT ALL IN FIRST WORLD SERIES APPEARANCE: Larry Walker waited a long time for this chance. Playing in the World Series for the first time in his 16-year major league career, he made it count. It just wasn't enough.

Walker homered, doubled twice and singled in his first four at-bats in the St. Louis Cardinals' 11-9 loss to the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday night. The 38-year-old right fielder also made a nice catch in the first inning, running down Manny Ramirez's drive to the warning track before banging into the wall. The Cardinals had the NL Central well in hand when they acquired Walker from the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 6.

But he's filled out what already was the National League's best offense, giving them a dangerous No. 2 hitter. Walker went 4-for-5 and has 10 RBIs this postseason, second on the Cardinals to Albert Pujols' 14. Walker's third-inning homer off knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, a drive that curled just inside the right-field foul pole, was his fifth of the postseason. It also was only the second in World Series history by a Canadian-born player.

I SCHILLING MAKES MEDICAL HISTORY IN BID TO MAKE BASEBALL HISTORY: Pitchers have dipped their fingers in pickle brine to ward off blisters, gotten cortisone shots in their shoulders or elbows, had their hamstrings wrapped in yards of tape. No one in World Series history ever has prepared for a game quite the way Curt Schilling will for the Boston Red Sox in Game 2 against the St. Louis Cardinals today. No one else, of course, ever had a dislocated ankle tendon sutured temporarily into place by stitching the skin to the deep tissue below it, much less had gone ahead to do it a second time less than a week later to pitch in a game of this magnitude. Schilting underwent that unique procedure, conceived by team medical director Dr.

Bill Morgan, before holding the New York Yankees to four hits and one run in seven innings in Game 6 of the ALCS. The spot of leaking blood on his sock gave new meaning to Red Sox and elevated him to a special place in team lore. Jim Lonborg, a large part of that lore, has an appreciation for pitching greatness and medical creativity. The last man to throw a complete-game one hitter in the World Series coincidentally the last time his Red Sox played the Cardinals for the championship in 1967 Dr. Lonborg went to school for premed and is in his 21 st year as a dentist after 15 years in the majors.

When Schilling takes the mound Sunday, Lonborg knows he will be seeing something extraordinary. "Watching Curt in that game a few days ago, I think that was one of the gutsiest performances I've ever seen," Lonborg said. "I don't know as a pitcher that I would be able to stay in the kind of groove that he's been able to maintain. But he's probably been able to identify his pitching motion and the components of it to the point where he knows exactly what he has to do to make good deliveries. He's really been able to focus on that." The sheath surrounding one of Schilling's tendons across the back of the ankle had ruptured, allowing the tendon to slip out of its groove.

The tendon kept snapping against the bone when Schilling pitched, and lost, in the opener against the Yankees. To repair the sheath, Schilling will require surgery after the season. Morgan's solution was to do something that would help Schilling right now. Series: Boston wins, takes 1-0 lead Continued from Page B1 Temperatures were dropping through the 40s, with the wind blowing in. And the game dawdled, as games do in American League ballparks.

When Keith Foulke struck out Roger Cedeno for the last out, the game was 4 hours old. It was, in fact, just the place for imperfect, and sometimes puzzling baseball. There were 14 walks, hit batters. Neither starting pitcher made it out of the fourth inning. The Cardinals scored three runs in the fourth inning without a hit.

On and on it went. But it is bottom line time, and the Red Sox showed there would be no offensive letdown from their heroics in the Bronx. "The farthest thing from my mind," manager Terry Francona said before the game. Boston will try to improve on its 1-0 lead with Curt Schilling in Game 2 Sunday night, against Matt Morris. St.

Louis has now lost seven straight World Series road games. That dark number can hardly be assigned to these Cardinals, since the other six came in 1985 and '87. But this number can be: St. Louis is 1-5 on the road in this postseason. Bellhorn's shot came on a 1-2 pitch off Julian Tavarez hopefully he didn't get mad and break his other hand and scored Jason Varitek, who had reached on Edgar Renteria's error at short.

The Cardinals were flubbing, too. Until then, it was a case of who might goof last..
