As someone who’s become accustomed to wearing black or neutral colors ninety percent of the time, I’m always looking for ways to add a splash of color to my life. One of these ways is choosing brighter, more vibrant travel accessories whenever I can, which is harder than it sounds when most suitcases and backpacks are the same exact shade of black.

That’s where Baboon to the Moon comes into the picture. “B2TM” (for short) has a mission to make the world a more colorful place by creating functional and fun-loving travel accessories you can take with you on any trip or adventure. The brand offers a wide range of bags and luggage for a quick weekend getaway or a longer journey, and the utility of its designs is thoroughly surprising. I checked out a few of B2TM’s offerings to see just how much I could incorporate them into my travel and commuting routines and was pleased by all the thoughtful details I kept finding. Exploring the Baboon to the Moon product line truly brought back the fun of being a kid and getting to pick a new backpack for the school year.

We like

  • B2TM’s products span a wide range of colors, whether you’re into more electric shades or some pastel hues. And sure, if you insist, the bags also come in black.
  • Most B2TM products have a (limited) lifetime warranty.
  • BT2M’s Org Bags are the perfect way to make sure your lipstick doesn’t end up all over your crisp, white shirts, which has happened to me way too many times.

We don't like

  • We love that B2TM is sustainable, but we’d love a little more information on exactly how it manages to make its ethical products.

No monkeying around

Baboon to the Moon products all meet the brand’s three standards: 1) It has to be sustainable; 2) It has to be technical; and 3) It has to be colorful. Let’s start with the brand’s third rule. As already mentioned, B2TM’s color options are some of the most diverse I've seen in the luggage space. On top of that, most bags feature second and third colors in smaller details.

I tested out the Go-Bag Mini in Soph Pink ($169) (which is a limited-run color, so get yours quick!), and I loved the little purple zippers and buckles sprinkled across the bag, along with the tropical yellow and purple pattern of the interior. The Fannypack ($65) in lilac proved to be even more colorful, with B2TM’s curlicue arrow logo in blue and an orange buckle, and the Crescent Crossbody ($99) in azure blue had a bright, lemony yellow interior, like a smiley face incarnate. I found myself in a better mood just being around so much color.

You can tell by the sturdiness of B2TM’s bags that they’ve been made for adventures and built to last. B2TM passes its second standard — being technical, or functional — with flying colors (did we mention these are colorful bags?) While using the Go-Bag Mini on a recent trip, I was able to fit the bag underneath the seat in front of me on the plane. Both the Go-Bag Mini and Go-Bag Small qualify as TSA carry-on items and can fit one to three and three to five days’ worth of packing, respectively. All the Go-Bags are made from waterproof material and have an attached zipper rain flap for added protection against inclement weather. There’s an external passport pocket for easy access to your most valuable travel document and the zippers, which are lockable, are made by YKK (Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha), the world's largest zipper manufacturer.

I was truly surprised by how much my Mini was able to hold. I was able to use it for a four-day trip, mostly because I’m an outfit repeater, but also because the bag is deceivingly spacious and really molds to its contents. All the different pockets made it fun and easy to compartmentalize my laptop, clothing, and toiletries, and though I was nervous about it starting to weigh too heavily on my back and shoulders, the padding on the shoulder straps distributed the weight in a comfortable and manageable way. I got to thinking I should probably invest in a Go-Bag both Small and Big and finally ditch the roller-suitcase lifestyle.

Fun in all shapes, sizes and colors

While I wasn’t jet-setting with my Go-Bag Mini, I was able to get quite a bit of use out of the Crescent Crossbody and Fannypack. I live in a city where walking is the main mode of transportation and what I love about utility accessories like the ones made by B2TM is that they free up both of my hands as I run errands or commute to work throughout the day. Both the Fannypack and the Crescent Crossbody were roomy enough to hold everything I needed to bring with me and, as expected, I was able to organize my belongings using the different pockets in each bag — no more fishing around for my keys or chapstick!

While I am sadly not a super outdoorsy person, I could definitely see myself using B2TM’s bags if I ever muster the energy to go on a serious hiking expedition. Not only would I be able to jam-pack a Crescent Crossbody with dozens of granola bars, but I know I could use its bright colors to try to distinguish myself in the wilderness if I ever got lost.
